The BTEC
consists of six units, five of which are mandatory core or

from a wide range of units, all of which are hardware-related.
BTEC Unit 1 |
Language and Communications |
Mandatory Core |
Accomplished through the writing of a
detailed report, alongside an associated presentation, on
the topic of software comparison. This could be a comparison
of operating systems, different office software packages…
virtually anything. |
BTEC Unit 2 |
Computer Systems |
Mandatory Core |
A four-assignment unit on the following
topics: CPU/Processor Theory;
Data
Representation, Number Systems and Logic Concepts; Low-level
Programming (currently based on the x86 architecture); and
PC-building. |
BTEC Unit 3 |
Business Information Systems |
Mandatory Core |
A three-assignment unit covering
organisational structures, data-handling and general BIS
topics. Two of the assignments are report-driven and the
third is completed through worksheets. The work covers data
and information flows, information-processing, structures
and business systems etc. |
BTEC Unit 7 |
End User Support |
Mandatory |
A three-assignment unit, with two
scenario-driven reports and one worksheet. Each of the
assignments are geared towards (obviously) user-support

creation and implementation of end-user systems. |
BTEC Unit 24 |
Network Design and Administration |
Mandatory |
A unit externally-assessed and moderated by
Edexcel. The precise details of this unit may change from
year to year but will always consist of reports and
exam-style (questionnaire) testing on basic networking
topics. |
BTEC Unit 23 |
Computer Hardware |
Optional (example) |
A single-assignment unit which is relatively
uncomplicated, ties in well with other units, with the work
for the unit restricted to the completion of a
worksheet/logbook, which covers PC hardware from theory,
through connectivity, to use. |
