Education Maintenance Allowance

If you are not employed or receiving a wage from your employer you can continue to learn and earn at the same time through an EMA.  If you continue to learn and develop your skills, you could receive up to £30 a week to help you out with things like books, travel and equipment.

It's called the Education Maintenance Allowance or EMA for short, and it's managed by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). The money the EMA could give you means you'll be able to concentrate on enjoying your course or programme without worrying so much about money. We'll also give you cash bonuses if you stick at it and do well. The extra cash will come in handy and because it's paid directly to you, you'll be a bit more independent and you won't have to rely so much on your parents or carers.

Apply for an Application Form as soon as you can or you may have to wait for your money. Once you have applied the Assessment and Payment body (APB) will then check if you are eligible and write to let you know, this is known as the Notice of Entitlement (NoE). Your NoE is an important document and payments cannot be made until the NoE has been signed by yourself and your school and your school, college or learning provider when you start your learning , so the sooner you hand in your NoE, the sooner you can start to receive your weekly EMA payments when you start your learning programme.

You can apply online or by calling the helpline on 0808 10 16219. Application Forms are also available from schools colleges, learning providers or Connexions personal advisers.
