Information about Key Skills qualifications

Key Skills are the basic skills you need to be able to work effectively. They are part of the framework of all the ITeC’s Apprenticeship schemes.

The main three Key Skills are:

  • Communication

  • Application of Number

  • Information and Communication Technology

The Key Skills you do, and the levels you do them at, depend on what you have achieved already, and what your framework requires. We will not ask you to do something you have already done.

When you start at the ITeC, we will work with you to assess your existing skills and see what Key Skill level you should start at, and agree what support you will need from us.

You can get a Key Skills unit certificate by completing a portfolio of evidence and passing a test. You may already have a qualification which exempts you from the test. Some qualifications even exempt you from a full Key Skill.

Key Skills are recognised qualifications, and are a great way of showing an employer how you have improved your basic skills since leaving school or college.
