Hull ITeC Celebrates 20 years of Success

Hull IteC, part of Hull City Council’s training arm, Hull Training, provides a variety of work based learning courses in a range of occupational areas incorporating the use and application of IT. Opened in 1984 at the ex Seaman’s Mission in Goulton Street, it originally delivered courses in computing, IT and electronics under the then national Youth Opportunities Programme.

Over the years, the Centre has adapted and extended its product base in line with national and local requirements to a position now where it boasts an extensive portfolio of NVQ courses to students on the Modern Apprenticeship schemes and provides up-skilling and conversion courses for employees of local companies. Currently, it has 207 trainees enrolled, provides placements with 80 companies in the Hull area and over the last year alone has delivered over 160 courses.

Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP

Councillor Kath Lavery

Sheilah Burden

The Right Honourable Alan Johnson MP was guest of honour at the commemorative event on Friday 2 July along with Cllr Kath Lavery, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for the Economy and Sheilah Burden, Executive Director, Learning and Skills Council, Humberside. As local MP and Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education, Mr Johnson has a particular interest in the provision, developments of and accomplishments in local training. The event included an exhibition charting the evolution of the IteC and career profiles of some of its hundreds of past students.

IteC centre manager, Jacky Jordan, said 'We wanted to illustrate just how much the nature and scope of IT training has changed in the last 20 years and how our courses have helped students embark on flourishing careers. We provide a whole host of courses that focus not only on the more familiar aspects of IT such as Business Information Systems but also cover a diverse range of subjects including IT support and Printing and Graphic Communications. We continually consult with local industry to ensure that our training reflects the needs of the economy.'

Hull City Council Cabinet Portfolio holder for the economy, Councillor Kath Lavery opened the proceedings, by saying 'We couldn’t let the fact that we are one of the City’s longest established training organisations go by without marking the achievement.'
