The Sign Making Industry- a few facts.

 

The Sign Making Industry offers excellent working conditions and progressive career opportunities with high levels of investment in new equipment and technology. Research continues into ways of designing, making and installing signs, evidence of which is all around us. In the United Kingdom there are over 22,000 people employed in sign making companies utilising a diverse mix of technical skills as part of the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of signs, supplied predominantly, but not exclusively, to the retail and service sectors.

It is among the fastest growing manufacturing industries in the United Kingdom today using a wide range of high technology equipment to keep pace with the ever-changing market requirements in the UK, Europe and worldwide. Every day we observe directional signs, tourist information signs etc, whilst travelling, and of course the variety of signs used above shop frontages, garages and 'fast food' restaurants are part of our everyday lives. Sign making can involve a variety of both traditional and modern methods including machining, joining, engraving, etching, hand decorating, spray painting, screen-printing, installing and maintenance. The industry requires highly skilled and motivated individuals. Employers recognise Apprenticeships as an ideal way of recruiting and training young people. A career in the industry offers wide ranging challenges and the opportunity to pursue a structured career path in a growth industry.

What Is an Apprenticeship?

It is an important new opportunity for all young people irrespective of gender, race or disability entering the world of work. It is aimed at young people who prefer to follow a practical route to a successful career. The Sign Making Apprenticeship offers a structured programme of learning where the skills are assessed to NVQ Level 2, NVQ Level 3 and Key Skills Awards. It is aimed at young people aged 16 years or over who are able to complete the Apprenticeship programme prior to their 25th birthday and will provide the opportunity to work whilst attaining skills and qualifications.

The sign making Industry is very diverse and offers a variety of production and technical jobs to include sign specifiers, estimators, process planners and quality technicians. Most are covered by the Apprenticeships and opportunities should be available to suit your needs. You will be a highly valued member of your company's workforce.

Key Skills

All Learners receive training in Key Skills - Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology to Level 2. This includes . Training is delivered on a day release where candidates produce a portfolio of evidence to meet the standards of the OCR Awarding Body.

The course is designed to be demanding and challenging, and requires a high degree of commitment from candidates
