HIGH ADVENTURE – HIGH ADRENALINE - July 2007

A group of learners went on a residential to High Adventure Outdoor Education Centre on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.  The residential was attended by Laura Robinson, R Spivey, N Malon, L Robinson, R Sutherland, S Whipp, T Woods, J Musgrove, K Moody and C Sizer with Tutors: T Stanford, M Money and A Abel.

The two days consisted of a mixture of activities all aimed at team work, building confidence and self esteem. After splitting into two teams, each team was given the task of building a raft capable of carrying its occupants.  After a couple of hour’s hard work on the water some decided to take a dip to cool down, the rest weren’t given the choice! After a bite to eat it was onto the archery.  Once again the activity quickly turned competitive with each team desperately trying not to be out done.

The second day got underway early with Abseiling and everyone managed to achieve at least one descent, some had to battle their fear of heights to achieve this (whilst a certain Tutor needed reassurance of the rope strength).  The final activity was team building and by this time it was quite obvious that our group really had developed into just that, a team.  Listening to the group on the way home is was quite obvious that the experience had achieved what it set out to do, and everybody had gained valuable experiences.

When asked whether or not they would like to do it again, the answer was a resounding YES!  Leanne Barker an Administration Apprenticeship said about the trip “It was a fantastic two days, we all had a great time and lots of laughs.”

Catering learners visit the Good Food Show - June 2007

A group of catering learners discovered the best of summer food and drink at this year’s BBC Food Food Summer Festival at The NEC Birmingham. The show offered food lovers five days of shopping with an al fresco feel and the chance to experience live cookery demonstrations and advice from celebrity chefs including Gordon Ramsay, James Martin, Lesley Waters and John Torode. Packed with the some of the tastiest food and drink in the country.

There were live food and cookery demonstrations, as well as the latest in decorating techniques, insider tips on shopping, as well as property and gardening advice.  The Learners from our Catering section managed to see Gordon Ramsey preparing and cooking a 3 course meal. Everyone enjoyed themselves they all got to see lots of different events on at the arena. Craig Norrie had these words to say about the experience, “I really enjoyed the trip to the arena especially were Gordan tried not to swear because his mum was there. I really enjoyed myself and learnt a lot and I would really like to go again. It was very good experience.”

Sign Learners visit Sign UK at the NEC - May 2007

The Signmaking course took its annual visit to the NEC in May, to take a look at the latest range of signs, digital and graphics equipment & machinery that is available to the industry. A group of 12 learners plus Tutors, Mike & Dale, made the 2 hour journey to Birmingham and spent a good few hours viewing and collecting various samples from the exhibitors.

A few of the learners took up one exhibitor’s challenge of: who can apply a new adhesive material to a surface the quickest and bubble free; although no one won the IPod on offer none were disgraced.

Other attractions included demonstrations on vehicle wraps, Signlab & Corel Draw software tutorials and all the latest LED lighting systems available to the industry at present. There were also the latest machines on display ranging in cost from 5K to 400K pounds. When the group met up for the return journey, most were laden with free samples that included life-size digital prints of models & movie characters, mugs, pens, hand tools and various confectionery. All in all a good day out that the learners enjoyed.
